A Lesson In Clueless-isms
A Lesson In Clueless-isms
“Whoa. You’ll like totally never believe it, but Clueless turns twenty years old this week! Like…no way, right?”
Way! July 21officially marks twenty years since Cher, Dee, Tai, Murray and the rest of the Clueless cast hit the big screen for the first time. And while the majority of the flick’s ‘90s teen contemporaries have been forgotten over the years, Clueless remains a light ‘n fluffy comedy classic and a treasured movie from our youth.
Aside from its hilarious ribbing of the obliviously blissful Beverley Hills rich kid lifestyle of the mid ‘90s, Clueless provided moviegoers with an arsenal of valley girl slang that was priceless. So in honour of twenty years of Clueless, we thought we’d provide a guide to the most ridiculously awesome Clueless-isms to be spoken by our flaky pals in the film.
These need to make a comeback!
Meaning: You’re completely full of it and I’m not listening. This is one of the most basic Clueless-isms, and an easy comeback. Make sure to form a ‘W’ with your thumbs and index fingers.
Example: Amber: “Mr. Hall, how can I answer that? The topic is Haiti and she's talking about some little party.” Cher: “Hello?! It was his 50th birthday!” Amber: “Whatever!”
Meaning: To completely lose your mind or freak out about something.
Example: Cher: "I said RSVP because it was a sit-down dinner. But people came that, like, did not RSVP, so I was, like, totally buggin'."
Meaning: Completely head over heels about something.
Example: Cher: “I am totally butt crazy in love with Josh!”
Meaning: Comparing someone to a Monet painting in the sense that they look really attractive from far away, but up close…not so much.
Example: Cher: “That girl is like a full on monet!”
Meaning: A damn fine sexual encounter.

Meaning: The ‘90s way of saying awesome, dope, fresh, sweet or swaggy.
Example: “Yo, look at that car. That ride is phat dawg!”
Meaning: Used to describe someone or something that is gross, ugly or highly unattractive. You know...fugly.
Example: Cher: “Christian, what do you think of that look?” Christian: “Hagsville.”
Meaning: A word used to tell people you’re leaving. Kind of like “I’m outta here.”
Example: “That’s it, I’m totally audi.”
Meaning: A sweet pair of legs.
Example: “Check out the stems on her. Hot damn!”
Meaning: Saying something that was unnecessarily rough.
Example: Cher: “That was way harsh, Tai.”
Meaning: Inspired by when the Baldwin brothers were seen as stud-muffins in the mid ‘90s, it’s a term used to describe a very attractive gentleman.
Example: Cher: "Okay, okay, so he is kind of a Baldwin."
Meaning: A gorgeous girl or a mega-babe.
Example: Cher: “Wasn’t my mom a total Betty?”
Meaning: A chubster, or someone that is overweight.
Example: Cher: “I feel like such a heifer. I had two bowls of Special K, 3 pieces of turkey bacon, a handful of popcorn, 5 peanut butter M&M’s and like 3 pieces of licorice.”
Meaning: Someone who doesn’t dress well.
Example: Cher: “Do you prefer fashion victim or ensemble-y challenged?”
Meaning: A virgin.
Example: Tai: “Cher, you’re a virgin?” Cher: “You say that like it’s a bad thing.” Dee: “Besides, the PC term is hymenally challenged.”
Meaning: Similar to “buggin’.” It means to completely freak out.

Snob and a half
Meaning: To be as giant of a snob as possible.
