20 Ways To Give In To Gingham
Fashion lovers, gingham is trending! Sure, it may sound like the name of a billionaire’s butler, but gingham is, of course, a classic checkered pattern. It’s one of those prints that’s always around, but rarely gets the spotlight it deserves.
Many people associate gingham with Dorothy Gale’s cutesy dress in The Wizard of Oz, a country bumpkin or worse, a picnic table and forgo wearing it all together. However, the spring/summer runways were stacked with head-to-toe gingham prints from designers like Marc by Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg and Dolce & Gabbana. From fitted dresses to sexy cigarette pants and even lingerie, there’s no way to avoid the allure of this timeless checkered print.
According to 10-year veteran stylist and image consultant Christie Ressel, incorporating gingham into your wardrobe is pretty simple. "It's a classic print that's not overly busy or overly complicated. It's easy for men or women to mix it within work or play," says Ressel.
If you’re looking to infuse gingham, or any pattern into your wardrobe, but you’re still hesitant, begin with baby steps. “Start with small doses like adopting a scarf or layer with a patterned tee under a blazer,” recommends Ressel. This should be a simple feat considering there’s everything from earrings to socks available in gingham. There’s no excuse to avoid this fashion moment.
Since gingham is one of those rare flattering patterns, a dress, a jacket or pants will all look fabulous. If you want to avoid the country girl aesthetic it’s best avoid overalls…and hay. “Mix gingham with different textures to create a sleek look. Pairing it with different textures will make [gingham] look more edgy and less Sunday stroll,” says Ressel.
Whether you decide to don gingham head to toe for a fashion-forward look or just carry a checkered clutch, this pattern is one trend you need to have this summer. Ressel agrees: This print is for everyone.
