How To Throw A Perfect 'Girls'-Themed Viewing Party
How To Throw A Perfect 'Girls'-Themed Viewing Party
The Girls girls are back. With the fourth season of HBO's acclaimed comedy premiering recently, what better way to celebrate the next episode and the ladies' comeback to the small screen than throwing your own Girls-themed viewing party with your friends? Here are our tips:
The "Horvath Bash"
“It’s so important to entertain. It’s what keeps you young. It’s why my parents look so old and decrepit because they don’t invite anyone over.” – Hannah Horvath Season 2, Episode 1
Hannah doesn't do very well at parties outside the home (remember Bushwick?), so let's make it a houseparty. A Hannah-inspired party will embody shabby chic. Here are the things you’ll need for the “Horvath Bash.”
As broke writer, Hannah's parties are low on extravagances. To get a party just like Hannah, fill the room with Christmas lights, red cups and some cheeky dollar store buys.
Since it's Hannah's party, you'd get a pass for a least spending part of it in the buff. But whatever you wear on top of your birthday suit (shorteralls, anyone?) top it with a trendy high bun.
Stock your party with comfort food. A bowl of pretzels, bagels and melted cheese and Kool Whip with a spoon are usually on Hannah’s go-to grocery list. For your main course try homemade mac and cheese, finished off with Rice Krispie squares for desert. Both are totally delicious, cheap and definitely can comfort your ladies while you watch!
B.Y.O.B. this can stand for bring your own booze or boxed wine. Hannah's not a big drinker, but you can still get the party started on a budget. To add some punch to the party make a party punch. A mixed drink bowl can stir up some fun and add some fizz to liven up the vibe of any get-together. Drink just enough to text an ill-advised and desperate missive to your ex.
A Hannah-esque party doesn't have the budget for a DJ, but that's why they invented the karaoke machine. Whether it’s someone wailing Robyn's "Dancing on My Own" off-key or Solange Knowles’ “Losing You” playing the background, the tunes will be hip and fun and totally danceable.
A box of Q-tips (inside joke for hardcore fans)
Jessa-Style “Mystery Party”
“Please come to the most important party of my life.” – Jessa Johansson Season 1, Episode 10
Send your friends a last minute text on the day of your party. Don’t tell them what it’s for or tell them to bring anything. Just let them know to come to your place or a secret location to have a good time, just like Jessa did on her wedding day.
Jessa is known as a world traveller, and an unpredictable modern hippy. So just like her wedding décor, keep it earthy, natural and hip. Try a bunch of tealights, bouquets of baby's breath, and vintage doliies for drink coasters. Better yet, make it an outdoor party on the patio or in the backyard to totally get the Jessa vibe.
Jessa is the true party girl, who isn't afraid of a little mess or exchanging germs. Share a massive plate of nachos with your besties or make a tray of mini-burgers/sliders with home-made condiments. Better yet, order a tray of assorted sushi to share.
A Petal Pusher is the best Jessa-inspired drink for your party. This intensely flavored cocktail made with pear nectar, rose petal liqueur, tequila and a splash of lime and garnished with a fresh edible blossom, is gorgeous and totally over-the-top, just like Jessa (we can't promise it won't give you a wicked hangover).
Jessa's soundtrack will be some gypsy jazz or some Euro indy rock with a nostalgic '80's sound, like The Scissor Sisters or The Knife.
What in God’s name is this party for? -- Marnie Michaels Season 1, Episode 10
Forget actually throwing a Marnie-themed party because the art gallery geek never really throws any. In true Marnie Michaels style just crash a sophisticated, fun, cocktail party and be prepared to power-mingle. Try an art gallery gala or a new restaurant opening and strut in with your entourage like you own the place.
That awesome and outrageous outfit you bought but never had the courage to wear? Get your BFFs to rock their totally impractical, slightly uncomfotable, but completely FABULOUS fashion-forward outfit and accessories for a stylish night on the town. (Remember Marnie's plastic dress from Season 2?)
Small, expensive hors d’oeuvres that none of your friends can pronounce and never quite fill you up.
Nothing washes down expensive hors d’oeuvres better than some champagne. It can be the cheap or expensive stuff if someone else is buying. But for a spin on such a chic drink to start the night, mix it up with some flavoured vodka, juice and syrup for a for Passion Royale. Posh enough for any Marnie-inspired gathering.
How about turning on some instrumentals or something unapologetically urban, like "Rill RIll" by Sleigh Bells.
A diary/agenda for all your girls to write down their invitations to the next big ticket party in the city or to help them organize and get their lives together, already.
Shoshana-inspired “Pink Party“
“I am ready to take this party by storm, like I am woman hear me roar. You know what I mean?” -- Shoshanna Shapiro Season 2, Episode 1
Invite your friends by text, using many emojiis.
Pretty in pink is all that’s needed for the ultimate girly-girl for your Girls viewing party. Shoshanna's apartment is an explosion of pink, ruffled pillows and frills, so your party will honour that theme. Add barbie-pink cutlery, cups, napkins, and plates can give you the ultimate feminine touch and Shoshanna flare you need.
What better way to indulge watching an episode of Girls than with a table full of petit fours? It's so fun to say. With these small, square cake treats you can nibble over a napkin and forget a fork.
Try a frozen cosmo mix. Shoshanna is always gabbing about her love for the ladies on Sex and the City, and we all know the cosmopolitan is their fave drink. This frozen version of the classic puts a spin on it for you and your ladies.
Latest pop hits will be blaring from the speakers as soon as the final credits start to roll. Pick female vocalists like Katy Perry, Beyonce, Fiest and Robyn to get the ladies up and dancing the night away.
Slankets/Snuggies for everyone! End your fete as a slumber party, dishing about crushes and reality TV stars deep into the night.
