Total Crush! Kayley Melissa
Total Crush! Kayley Melissa
When it comes to hair envy, our number one crush is Kayley Melissa (sorry, Kimmy K). The YouTube star has a seriously impressive mane and mad styling skills when it comes to braiding, blow outs and making waves. Based in Los Angeles, Kayley recently appeared on Get Ready With Rachel, where she showed us how to get the perfect boho-priness waves for a bridal shower. We dished with Kayley on Mean Girls, Emma Watson and what we really wanted to know: her must-have hair product.
What's your favourite piece of clothing right now?
Black skinny jeans! They go with everything and I have this pair from Rock & Republic that are the most comfortable thing I own. After that, wool hats and fedoras. I wear them all the time. I just think you can add so much to an outfit with such a simple accessory.
What's your number one, can’t-live-without beauty product?
Texturizing spray! I have fine, silky hair and it is hard to get it to do anything. Texturizing spray provides volume and adds grip to the hair. It makes any updo or half-updo styling you do infinitely easier, but it will give curled down styles amazing body as well. Best of all, you can use it to pull your braids apart and make a big statement braid (think Elsa from Frozen).
What's your favourite restaurant?
There's this place in LA called Rice. It's amazing! I go there for the sushi—and their desserts. I can't eat gluten or dairy, and it is oddly hard to find places that make gluten-free sushi. That alone makes me love them, but their philosophy of "no preservatives, no artificial color, and no chemical seasonings" is very refreshing as well!
Where is your favourite place to travel?
Anywhere I've never been before! I love experiencing different cultures. I think it is incredible that humans can be so similar and so different in the way we speak, dress, and the environments we create.
What do you do to stay healthy?
I focus on consuming as many vegetables as I can. I've found that really helps me. When I'm deciding what I will cook in the week, I look for ways to alter recipes to have more vegetables (like spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles over spaghetti). Doing that helps to steer me away from processed, starch heavy, or sugary foods and closer to consuming foods in a way that is healthy for my body. I think the most important thing in being healthy is your mindset. Look for ways to eat food that has been grown, not processed. Look for ways to make your food choices as pure as possible. At the same time, I do allow myself to indulge in foods that don't fit that mold, in moderation. I love cupcakes and cookies. I don't think it's bad to have one of them every now and then! Especially if it keeps your head in the game in between.
What's your favourite movie?
Is it a cliche if I say Mean Girls? I was actually homeschooled, so I totally identify with the awkwardness of assimilating into a "normal" school. I also just love Tina Fey and I think Mean Girls is one of the best things she has done.
Who is your number one Total Crush?
Emma Watson is my girl crush! I am so amazed by everything she has accomplished and how talented she is. I cannot imagine growing up in the spotlight the way she has and remaining so grounded and poised. Not to mention the impact she has had via her speech at the UN for the HeforShe campaign. The discussion that speech started was so pivotal. She's definitely my girl crush!
